ABSTRACT

Instruments for the sustainable growth attract a lot of attention. An assessment of e-commerce development through the example of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam allows determining the prospects for this branch of digital economy in most of the developing countries. The aim of this study is to assess the role of e-commerce in sustainable economic growth and to identify areas in which the strategy for e-commerce development in Vietnam until 2025 can be improved. The research methods include dynamic SWOT analysis, correlation analysis, and cluster analysis using IBM SPSS Statistics 23 software. Within the study the conditions for the development of the e-commerce market in Vietnam are identified;the role of e-commerce in ensuring sustainable economic growth is analyzed;the relationship between e-commerce and other economic and social factors affecting growth and development is analyzed;directions for the development of e-commerce in each Vietnamese province are proposed. The scientific novelty of this work consists in the approach proposed for assessing the contribution of e-commerce to the sustainable growth of GDP and the classification of e-commerce development policies based on the level of regional development. The authors provide recommendations for improving the government strategy for e-commerce development in Vietnam based on the grouping of administrative entities according to their technological and infrastructural development. The results of the study can be used in the elaboration of the government policy on the development of e-commerce and the digital economy in general – not only in Vietnam, but in other developing countries as well. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: This paper presents the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Vietnam's tourism industry to propose appropriate recovery strategies in the future. Design/methodology/approach: This study uses a combination of research methods. Data were collected from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, General Statistics Office, Vietnam National Administration of Tourism and Ministry of Health. Non-parametric statistical methods were applied to analyze the differences between epidemic and non-epidemic periods and find correlations between the number of infections and data related to the performance of the tourism industry. In-depth interviews with 20 people linked to tourism activities were conducted to analyze the impacts and propose strategies for future recovery. Findings: The results demonstrate the severe impact of the pandemic on Vietnam's tourism industry based on a decrease in the number of visitors, business activities, revenue and employment rate. Therefore, to recover tourism – Vietnam's key economic sector in the future – developing reasonable strategies to build a safe tourism environment, building a sustainable tourist market, diversifying and improving tourism high-quality tourism products, marketing, human resources, digital transformation and sustainable tourism are necessary, along with the development trend of the industry after COVID-19. Originality/value: This paper synchronously and systematically presents the effects of COVID-19 on Vietnam's tourism industry based on official data. Strategies are proposed to handle these effects on a reliable scientific basis. This study can be considered a valuable reference for researchers and managers of tourism in developing countries, such as Vietnam. © 2022, Hoa Dinh Vu, Anh Thi Ngoc Nguyen, Nga Thi Phuong Nguyen and Duy Ba Tran.

ABSTRACT

Purpose This study aims to develop a competency model for the Vietnamese workforce in the era of Industry 4.0. Design/methodology/approach A combination of an online survey and a Delphi study was conducted to identify a set of skills, abilities, knowledge and personalities that are critical for effective performance in the future workplace. Findings A set of 26 competencies was identified. Similar to previous findings in the context of developed countries, the set centres around a group of competencies commonly called "21st century competencies". It also includes characteristics unique to a developing nation. Research limitations/implications The proposed framework of competencies may not cover all human capabilities necessitated by the workplace and may include items with overlapping definitions. The study only represents the view of the business community, and its survey sample was limited in size and location. The impact of COVID-19 on the competency model was not explicitly covered during the study. Practical implications The competency model could serve as a basis for the educator to reform curricula, the policy maker to devise policies and the employer to develop training programmes. It can be used as a reference for other nations at similarly-developmental level. Originality/value The present study is among a few empirical studies regarding a model for Industry 4.0 competencies in the context of low middle-income countries and probably provides one of the first Industry 4.0 competency models for Vietnam. It also provides a novel framework for identifying and analyzing competencies.

ABSTRACT

The goal of the article is to examine the relationship between supply chain risk, Supply chain integration, Supply chain risk resilience and Firm performance in the global supply chain of the Vietnamese pharmaceutical industry. Data was collected for 3 months with 389 satisfied pharmaceutical enterprises for analysis on Smart PLS software. The results show that Supply chain risk has a statistically significant negative impact on supply chain integration. Moreover, Supply chain Integration has a statistically significant positive impact on Supply chain risk Resilience and firm performance. Finally, we find that Firm performance is a good foundation for business operations and supply chain risk resilience. Therefore, we make recommendations to Vietnamese pharmaceutical enterprises that: Supply chain Integration is extremely necessary to ensure performance and Supply chain risk resilience in the context of the current covid-19 pandemic. © 2021 Growing Science Ltd. ABSTRACT

Purpose: National studies suggest over fifty percent of physicians have feelings of burnout (Shanafelt et. al. Mayo Clin Proc 2015). This can result in emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Left unmanaged this can lead to depression, addiction, and suicidal ideation. Burnout rates are reported for radiation oncology residents, program directors, and academic chairs but not amongst radiation oncologists who practice brachytherapy. The purpose of this study was to determine the rates of burnout amongst physician members of the American Brachytherapy Society (ABS). Materials and Methods: An anonymous online cross-sectional survey was performed of ABS physician members from December 2020 to February 2021. The survey was initially emailed from the ABS to members, followed by two participation reminders. Burnout was assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Service Survey (MBI-HSS), a validated 22-question survey. Thirteen additional demographics questions were included. High emotional exhaustion (EE) was defined a score of at least 27, high depersonalization was defined as a score of at least 10, and low personal accomplishment (PA) was defined by a score of no more than 33 (Rotenstein et. al. JAMA 2018). This study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Results: Overall, 51 out of 400 members responded to the survey (13% response rate). Respondents were predominantly male (69%), married (78%), had 1-5 full time faculty or partners (59%), worked 51-60 hours per week (61%), deliver 6-10 brachytherapy treatments per week (43%), and have a brachytherapy suite in their department (63%). Six percent of respondents met the strict MBI-HSS criteria for high burnout (as defined by high EE, high DP, and low PA). Fifty-seven percent of respondents reported at least one manifestation of professional burnout (either high EE or DP). Based on individual MBI-HSS subscale scores, 47% of respondents demonstrated high EE, 37% high DP, and 16% low PA. Compared to prior surveys of radiation oncology academic chairs, residency program directors, and residents, survey respondents consistently had higher mean scores for EE and higher scores for DP, but higher scores for PA (Table 1). The most common identified stressors were electronic medical records (EMR) and excessive workload. Forty-seven percent of respondents also reported that COVID-19 increased their feelings of burnout. Respondents from academic facilities were more likely to have increased feelings of burnout due to COVID-19 (odds ratio 6.8, 95% CI 1.8-25.7). Conclusions: Nearly 60% of ABS physician members who responded to this survey reported symptoms of professional burnout with 6% meeting strict criteria for high burnout. This is higher than that reported for radiation oncology residents, program directors, or academic chairs. Managing stressors related to the EMR and workload are potential areas for improvement.

ABSTRACT

The Covid-19 pandemic has inflicted disastrous damages on various aspects of human lives, especially the healthcare sector. The shortage of beds, medical staff, and other facilities in hospitals posed an acute dilemma over who should be given precedence in the treatment process and whether a more seriously ill person should sacrifice for people with less severe illness. With an interpretative approach, this short research article discusses the above questions by using compulsory organ donations as a proxy. After evaluating the compulsory organ donation from the ethical aspect, researchers then dig into the issue from legal and socioeconomic perspectives. The authors are convinced by Kant and Nozick’s proposals on ethics and justice regarding organ donation and patient sacrifice. The research also found out that the problem is not merely limited to the question of morality but also extended to an opt-out system for ensuring social welfare. Finally, the paper encourages medical practitioners, legislators, and social activists to make decisions about medical-legal issues based on interdisciplinary views.
